Common Recording Noise Types and How They're Repaired

What are the buzzing, humming and hissing sounds in your recording, and can they be removed? It depends on the type. Steady background noise and electrical hum are usually the easiest to handle, sudden noises come next, and noise that's fully tangled up with the voice is the hardest. This page introduces the most common noise types, their causes and how professional audio repair treats them, so you can judge whether your file is worth saving.

Five common types of recording noise

Electrical hum. A low buzzing from power interference, grounding problems or poor cables. Because its frequency is stable (usually the mains frequency and its harmonics), it's relatively easy to remove precisely.

Room noise. The hiss of air-conditioning, fans and computer fans. It's continuous and steady, and modern noise reduction handles it well.

Sudden noises. Coughs, chairs bumping, keyboard clicks, phone vibrations. These need locating and treating one by one, which takes more time, but most cases improve well.

Echo (reverb). The "bathroom sound" of recording in an empty room. It used to be very hard to treat; AI de-reverb has improved a lot and most cases can be improved noticeably.

Hiss. High-frequency hiss from gain set too high or older equipment. It can be reduced, but over-processing makes the voice sound muffled, so it's a matter of balance.

Professional repair vs. "one-click noise reduction"

Many apps have a one-click noise reduction button. It's convenient, but it applies one set of parameters to the whole file: the noise goes down and the detail and air in the voice often go with it, leaving an "underwater" or robotic sound. Professional repair treats different sections and noise types separately, comparing as it goes, aiming for "you can't tell it was processed" rather than just "no noise".

Why sooner is better

Noise itself doesn't get worse over time, but files do: storage can fail, and re-compression can stack up. Every pass through a messaging app strips another layer of detail and shrinks what can be repaired. If the file matters to you, back up the original early and leave time for repair before you need it.

Three questions to judge whether a file can be saved

First, can you hear the voice clearly? If the voice is still there, there's usually good room for improvement. Second, is the noise steady or random? Steady noise is easier; random noise takes more work. Third, can it be re-recorded? Irreplaceable recordings are where a repair service is most worth it.
