Ten Tips for Editing Short-Form Video

A few practical things that make short-form video better:

  1. Open strong. The first three to five seconds matter most. A surprising shot, a fast sequence or a bold caption grabs attention immediately.
  2. Keep the pace. Short videos move fast. Choose every clip carefully, cut the slack, and use music, sound effects and transitions to emphasize the rhythm.
  3. Use transitions with care. Fades and slides make cuts feel smooth and professional, but too many become confusing.
  4. Write short captions. Time is limited, so captions should be brief and clear. Fonts, colors and animation can make them more engaging.
  5. Match music and sound. Choose music and effects that fit the mood, and keep the volume from covering speech.
  6. Tell a small story. Even a short video should have a beginning, middle and end: a problem and a solution, a product feature, a feeling.
  7. Cut to the beat. If the video runs to music, sync the cuts to the rhythm so picture and sound feel connected.
  8. Use good footage. Clear, stable clips look professional; heavily compressed or low-quality footage doesn't.
  9. Don't overdo effects. Effects should highlight the point, not distract from it.
  10. End with a call to action. "Follow us" or "learn more" guides viewers to the next step.
