How Video Editing Is Priced: Common Models and the Four Factors That Affect Cost

There's no standard rate for video editing, but the logic behind the price isn't hard to follow. There are three common pricing models: by finished length, by project, and by hours. The actual amount is driven mainly by four factors: the amount of footage, the complexity of the finished video, the scope of revisions and the urgency of the deadline. Once you understand these, you can read a quote and agree a sensible budget with the editor.

Three common pricing models

By finished length. For example a rate per minute of finished video. Common for videos with a fixed format, such as interviews and course videos. Easy to estimate, but not always suitable for complex videos.

By project. One price for the whole video covering editing, subtitles, music and a set number of revisions. The most common model for commercial work; the key is that the quote lists what's included.

By hours. Billed on the editor's actual working time, mostly for long-term arrangements or projects where the requirements change a lot.

Four factors that drive the price

1. Amount and condition of the footage

One hour of footage and ten hours of footage differ enormously just in the time it takes to watch and select. Unsorted footage, mixed formats and poor sound add preparation time that shows up in the cost.

2. Complexity of the finished video

Simple cutting and joining is a different job from a video with motion titles, designed transitions, color grading and sound design. To control the budget, decide which effects are necessary and which are extras.

3. Revisions

Most quotes include a set number of revisions, with more charged separately. That's not being difficult; "one more version" has a real cost. The clearer the brief up front, the lower the revision cost.

4. Urgency

Rush jobs usually carry a surcharge, because the editor has to reschedule other work. If time allows, commissioning early is the most practical way to save money.

How to ask for a quote efficiently

Include three things: the length and how the footage was shot, the expected finished length and its purpose, and links to reference videos. The more complete the information, the more accurate the quote, and the fewer disputes about extra charges later.

Frequently asked questions

Why do quotes from different studios differ so much?

Because what's included, the experience and the production standard differ. Compare what's included, not just the total.

My budget is limited. Can the cost be reduced?

Yes. Organizing the footage in advance, listing the requirements clearly and dropping unnecessary effects all reduce the hours and the cost.
