The short answer: yes, and for many videos a phone app is all you need. We won't tell you that phone edits are bad. This page is about where the apps' limits are, so you edit what you should yourself and hand over what you should.
What phone apps do very well
- Trimming the ends, cutting out mistakes.
- Automatic subtitles. Accuracy is good, but check every line for errors.
- Adding music, stickers and simple text.
- Templates for quick social shorts.
- Vertical video, Stories, everyday records.
If that's your video, editing it yourself is fastest and costs nothing.
What phone apps struggle with
- Long videos: over ten minutes, with dozens of files, the phone lags and it's hard to find anything.
- Multi-camera: aligning and switching between two or more phones' footage is hard to do precisely in an app.
- Audio: noise reduction, levelling sections, balancing voice and music; app features are limited.
- Colour: matching shots from different times and cameras; apps only apply filters.
- Brand consistency: the same fonts, colours, intro and outro and logo position in every video.
- Formal uses: corporate, paid ads, big-screen playback, where quality and detail are judged differently.
Things to watch with free apps
- Watermarks: some free tiers add a watermark on export, or lock features behind payment.
- Licensing of built-in music and assets: some music, stickers and templates are licensed for personal accounts only; using them commercially (company accounts, ads) may breach the terms. Check the app's notes, or use music you have licensed.
- Export quality: choose 1080p or higher at export, not the default low setting.
When professional editing is worth it
A simple test: how long will this video be used, and by how many people? A Story disappears in 24 hours: edit it yourself. A homepage video stays for a year and every customer sees it: worth doing properly. The other test is time: a whole weekend of your own editing, or that time spent on your actual business. See the video editing FAQ.
Both can run in parallel
Many clients do this: the formal videos come to us, the daily shorts they edit themselves. We give you the fonts, colours and intro/outro files from the delivered video to apply in your own edits, so both look like the same brand.
Frequently asked questions
I'm halfway through editing in an app. Can Chipscat take over?
Yes, but app project files usually can't be opened elsewhere. Send the original footage and your version as a reference; we re-edit and keep the structure you want.
Can a video edited in a phone app be used for paid ads?
Yes, provided the music and assets are licensed for commercial use and the export quality is sufficient. Ad platforms are stricter on quality and rights than ordinary posts.
Can I edit a video Chipscat delivered in an app afterwards?
You receive the exported file, which you can shorten or caption in an app. For content changes, we make them within the one round of minor revisions; see how to give feedback on a video edit.
